アメリカンから見たジャパニーズ

大学卒業してすぐ日本に来ました。卒業までは一年間をかけて、ＪＥＴプログラムに入る為に様々の書類や推薦状などを用意して、そして面接を受けました。ＪＥＴプログラムに合格率は３０％ぐらいですが、自信がありました。申請書に生活圏の希望を一応書けるので、「都会」か「田舎」から「都会」を選んで、そして地域の希望は東京、横浜、大阪を書きました。しかし、受理しましたら兵庫県神崎郡神埼町に配属された。

After graduating I immediately came to Japan. Before I graduated I spent a year preparing various forms and recommendation letters, then I was interviewed. The acceptance rate for JET is about 30%, but I had confidence. On the application form there was a place to write a preference in regards to one’s placement. From “urban” and “rural” I chose “urban”, and wrote Tokyo, Yokohama, and Osaka as my preferred placement locations. However, when I was accepted I was placed in Hyogo prefecture, Kanzaki-gun, Kanzaki-cho.

神崎町(以来神河町に改名した)はかなり田舎です。だけど、気に入りました。神河の人たちは心暖かくて、段々たくさんの日本人の友だちと知り合いをできました。自然が多くて、良く自転車で散歩して、近くに神社に参りました。夜は友だちの家か、森の中にある居酒屋で焼酎を飲んで、真っ黒の夜の中で帰って、川の音と蛙の鳴き声を聞きながら寝ました。とても幸せの三年間でした。今は神戸に住んでいますが、神河町は自分の日本の「故郷」になりました。たまに遊びに行ったら凄く懐かしい気持ちです。

Kanzaki (since renamed Kamikawa) is extremely rural. However, it appealed to me. The people of Kamikawa are warm-hearted, and I gradually made many Japanese friends and acquaintances. It’s surrounded by nature, and I would often go for bike rides and visit nearby shrines. At night I would go to a friend’s house or an izakaya in the middle of the woods and drink shochu with my friends. I would return home in the pitch black night, falling asleep to the sound of the river and the frogs croaking. It was a very happy three years. Now I love in Kobe, but Kamikawa is my own “hometown” in Japan. When I go back to visit I get a very strong nostalgic feeling.

Continuing my self-introduction

他の授業より、日本語のクラスは一番好きで、結局生物学から日本語と日本文学に専攻を変えました。日本文学を研究するためにカリフォルニア大学アーバイン校に転校して、3年間日本語と日本文学や日本文化を深く勉強しました。日本の古典文学や近代文学を勉強する上で、日本の映画、演劇、美術、社会などを学習しました。

More than my other classes, I liked Japanese the best, and in the end I changed my major from biology to Japanese language and literature. In order to research Japanese literature I transferred to the University of California, Irvine, and studied Japanese literature and culture in depth for three years. Besides studying classical and modern Japanese literature, I also studied subjects such as Japanese film, theater, art, and society.

卒業してからＪＥＴプログラムで日本に来ました。３年間兵庫県の田舎で高校のＡＬＴの仕事をして、その後に様々な職業に就きました。日本に来てから、この６年間日本文化に関係ある趣味がいろいろありました。例えば書道、柔道、篆刻、三味線、琵琶を全部習いました。またそれぞれについては詳しく書きたいと思います。「日本人より日本人」と良く言われまして、このプログで私の目から見た日本文化の興味深いところや、日本人の習慣を書きますので、一緒に考えましょう。

After graduating I came to Japan through the JET Programme. I worked for three years as a high school ALT in the rural area of Hyogo prefecture, after which I worked a variety of jobs. In the six years since I’ve come to Japan, I’ve had various hobbies relating to Japanese culture. For example, I’ve learned calligraphy, judo, seal engraving, shamisen, and biwa. Later I’ll go into each of these topics in depth. I’m often told I’m “more Japanese than Japanese”, and in this blog I'll write about the fascinating aspects of Japanese culture and the customs of Japanese people as I see them. So let's think about them together!

  

始めまして。ダグラスと申します。このブログのテーマは外国人の目から見た日本文化と日本人の習慣なので、毎回トピックを選びますが、最初には自己紹介シリーズをしたいと思います。

Nice to meet you. My name is Douglas. The theme of this blog is Japanese culture and the customs of Japanese people through the eyes of a foreigner, so each time I will pick a topic, but at first I would to introduce myself.

毎回このように日本語を英語に直しながら投稿しますので、英語を勉強したい方や、日本語が分からない方に役に立つと思います。私の日本語は間違いだらけになると思いますから、気になるところがありましたらコメントで直して下さい。分かりやすいのように、日本語をできるだけそのまま英語に訳すつもりです。

Each time I will be translating my Japanese posts into English, so those who want to study English, or those who don't understand Japanese will find this useful. My Japanese will be riddled with mistakes, so if you notice anything it would help me if you fix it in the comments. In order to be easy to understand, I will try to translate the Japanese into English as literally as possible.

私はカリフォルニア州に生まれ、神戸に住んでいる２８歳の会社員です。生まれてからいろんな州に住んで、中学生の時に３年間ハワイに住んだことがあります。この時期に日本のポップカルチャーに興味を持って、初めて日本のアニメを見たり、日本の漫画を読んだりしました。高校の時にアニメと漫画の大ファンになり、大学に入るころに毎日のように見ました。自分でひらがなを覚えましたげど、大学に入るとちゃんと日本語を勉強しようと思いました。最初はかなり難しかったけど、すごく面白いと思いました。

I am a California-born, 28 year old company employee living in Kobe. Since I was born I lived in several states, and when I was in junior high school I lived in Hawaii for three years. During this time I had an interest in Japanese pop culture, and I watched Japanese animation and read Japanese comics for the first time. During high school I became a big fan of anime and manga, and by the time I entered college I watched it almost every day. I learned hiragana by myself, but when I entered college I decided to properly study Japanese. It was quite difficult at first, but it was very interesting.
